In the two paragraphs I think Simon Biggs is trying to explain how we as humans interact with the world around us to form a sense of self. Biggs says his intention in his research is to "destabilize" the subjective experience in hopes that people will doubt and question how they see the world around them. He uses this term "interactive systems" to explain the relationship between the artwork, the reader and how people find or create a way to identify with the artwork in a way that allows them to apply it to how they identify themselves as individuals.
As I read further Biggs says "Central to this is creativity and novelty and thus a key element in how we value novelty lies in its role in the differentiation of self" Basically what I took from this quote is that Biggs is say that depending on the creativity of the interactive system and how the individual relates to the artwork only will it produce a novelty effect.
